Checkers Strategies – Winning Moves and Tactic Thinking

Like all games, checkers requires strategy as well as a fair bit of a planning and forethought in order to play it effectively. While becoming an expert checkers player will obviously take a number of games to accomplish, there are a few checkers strategies that can go a long way in helping your game. Here are some examples:

  • Try to set up moves where you can take two or three of your opponent’s pieces even if it means initially sacrificing one of your pieces.
  • Try to anticipate your opponent’s move and formulate a checkers strategy that will block him or her and render these moves ineffective.
  • Try to keep your opponent from reaching your King’s Row for as long as possible. A player that does not have any kings or only has a few of them will be at a considerable disadvantage compared to a player that has one or more kings.
  • Maneuver one of your pieces between your opponent’s pieces and your own in order to move closer to the opponent’s piece without being captured.
  • Avoid having your pieces bunched up in the center of the board. Following this checkers strategy will help ensure that you do not run short of moves and thereby lose the game.
  • Keep in mind that pieces that are in the middle of the board have more options than pieces that are placed along the edges.
  • Study every potential move thoroughly before making it. This checkers strategy will ensure that you do not commit careless mistakes or lapses of judgment.
  • When you are nearing the end of the game, maneuver your kings so that they occupy the center of the board.
  • Using the sides of the board can be quite an effective checkers strategy. Pieces that are located along the sides cannot be captured.
  • If you are left with only a few pieces or all of your kings have been captured, move your pieces towards the corner of the board and simply move back and forth from that spot. This checkers strategy will make it difficult for your opponent to capture your remaining pieces and you might even get a few captures in the process.
